Warped boards and popped screws are not just eyesores. They are your dock telling you that something is wrong, and the longer you wait, the more expensive the conversation gets.

Afternoon thunderstorms drench it. Salt air works into every gap and thread. Most dock decking problems that homeowners notice in the summer started quietly the previous winter, or even the winter before that. What "cupping" actually means and why it happens here

Cupping is when the edges of a board curl upward while the center stays lower, giving the board a shallow U-shaped profile. Run your hand across a cupped dock board and you will feel ridges at every joint. Visually, the surface looks rippled instead of flat.

It happens because of moisture imbalance. The underside of a dock board is exposed to water vapor from the bay or canal below. It stays relatively damp. The top surface takes direct sun for hours each day and dries out faster. When one face of a board loses moisture while the other retains it, the drier face shrinks slightly and the board curves toward it. Wood species matters enormously here. A few things accelerate cupping in this area:

What causes cracking

Cracking is a different failure mode, though it often accompanies cupping. Where cupping is about moisture imbalance across the width of a board, cracking is usually about shrinkage along the length or through the face.

Wood fibers expand when wet and contract when dry. Over many cycles, the fibers fatigue and begin to separate. In Sarasota's summer rainy season, boards can go through that cycle almost every single day. End-grain cracks show up first because end grain absorbs and releases water faster than face grain. Face checks (cracks running along the length of the board's surface) follow as the wood ages.

Salt does its own damage here. Salt crystals deposit on the surface as water evaporates, and those crystals draw more moisture from the air, keeping the surface humid even when the sun is trying to dry it out. That inconsistency accelerates fiber breakdown. Composite decking is not immune to cracking. Low-quality composite boards can develop surface crazing (fine surface cracks) after years of UV exposure. Why fasteners pop and what it signals

A screw or nail that was flush with or slightly below the surface of a board when it was installed, but now stands proud of the surface, has been pushed out by the wood moving around it. Here is what is happening: wood expands when it gets wet. As the board swells sideways and along its length, it pushes against anything that is holding it in place, including fasteners. Eventually it is standing up enough to catch a bare foot or a dock line.

Popped fasteners are dangerous in a very direct way. A raised screw head in the middle of a dock surface is a trip hazard and a laceration risk, especially when the deck is wet. These are fixable with decking replacement and proper re-fastening, often without touching the substructure at all.

Structural problems are signaled by a few things:

  • Springy or soft spots when you walk the deck. If the surface flexes more than a little underfoot, the stringers or joists beneath the decking may be compromised.
  • Fasteners that will not hold even when driven back in. If you push a screw back down and it comes back up within days, the joist or stringer it was biting into may be soft or rotten.

Spot replacement. If only a handful of boards are cupping or cracking, and the framing underneath is solid, replacing just those boards is reasonable. The tricky part is matching weathered existing decking with new material. New pressure-treated pine boards alongside old gray boards will look mismatched for a while. Composite boards hold color better but still vary by manufacturer and age.

Full deck replacement. If the majority of boards are compromised, or if you are switching materials (say, from pressure-treated wood to composite), a full re-deck is cleaner and often more cost-effective in the long run than patching board by board. A re-deck also gives you the chance to inspect every piece of the substructure and replace anything questionable before it is buried under new boards again.

Fastener upgrade. If the boards themselves are in decent shape but fasteners are the main problem, re-fastening with 316 stainless screws (or switching to hidden fastener clips if the board type supports it) can significantly extend the life of the existing surface. Hidden fasteners eliminate the surface exposure entirely, meaning no heads to corrode and nothing to pop up.

Material upgrade to composite. If you are on your second or third pressure-treated deck in the same number of decades, it may be time to think about composite. High-quality composite decking handles the moisture cycle far better, does not splinter, and holds fasteners reliably. It costs more upfront, but the maintenance savings are real over a 15 or 20-year horizon. What not to do

A few common DIY approaches that tend to make things worse:

Driving popped fasteners back in without checking the substrate. If the joist underneath is soft, you are just compressing rotten wood. The fastener will pop again, and you have learned nothing useful.

Painting or sealing over cracked boards. Sealer can slow moisture intrusion at the surface, but it does nothing for structural integrity and can actually trap moisture underneath in boards that are already compromised.

Covering cupped boards with a new layer of decking. Putting new boards over old cupped boards just transfers the problem upward and creates a surface that flexes unpredictably. It also adds weight to the framing that may already be under stress.
