Why your dock pilings are leaning - and whether your dock is in danger

Lean a few degrees and your dock still works fine. Lean a little more and suddenly your boat lift won't level, your decking starts racking, and one bad storm finishes the job. The question is never "is it leaning?" - the question is always "why is it leaning, and how far along is the problem?"

Pilings lean for several different reasons, and those reasons matter enormously, because the fix for one cause is completely different from the fix for another. What matters is:

  • How much it's leaning (a few degrees vs. visibly bowed or angled)

The most common reason pilings lean: sediment shift and erosion

The sandy, soft bottom of most Sarasota-area waterways is not a stable foundation. Tides, current, boat traffic, and heavy rain events all move sediment. When the soil around the base of a piling is gradually washed away or compressed unevenly, the piling loses its lateral support and begins to tilt.

Leaning away from shore (seaward lean): This is the most common pattern and is often caused by the accumulated force of boats pulling away from the dock, wave energy, and current. Leaning toward shore (landward lean): This is less common and more worth investigating promptly.   • The existing piling is leaning but still has some structural integrity
