Sarasota is not a cold-weather climate, so the word "winterize" does not quite fit. What you are really doing is summerizing - protecting your investment against intense UV radiation, accelerating salt corrosion, thunderstorm season, and the specific damage that happens when mechanical systems sit idle in a humid marine environment for months at a time. Let's walk through every component, explain why each step matters, and be honest about what you can skip without regret.
Why summer is harder on hardware than winter
Most people think of winter as the damaging season for outdoor equipment. Down here, summer is the real threat. Consider what your dock and lift face from May through September:
- Daily thunderstorms with surge, wave action, and lightning-induced voltage spikes
- Peak UV exposure that degrades polypropylene straps, PVC-coated cables, and plastic components faster than any other time of year
- High humidity with no airflow inside motor housings and gear boxes, which creates condensation and internal rust
- No one checking on things - a small problem that would be caught in a week becomes a large problem over four months
- Active hurricane season - June through November, with the statistical peak in September, right when you are away
Understanding this helps you prioritize. You are not draining water out of pipes to prevent freezing. You are shielding mechanical parts from corrosion, lubricating moving surfaces before they sit idle, and making sure the whole structure can survive a storm without you being there to respond.
Start with a thorough inspection before you do anything else

- Inspect each cable for broken strands, kinking, or flattening. If you see broken wires sticking out like fishhooks, replace the cable before you leave.
- Lubricate the full length of each cable with a penetrating corrosion inhibitor. Work it into the lay of the wire, not just the surface.
- Check pulleys and sheaves for cracked or seized bearings. A pulley that spins freely now may be frozen solid after four months of salt air and no movement.
- Leave the lift in the fully raised position. This keeps the cradle out of the water, reduces corrosion on the bunks and bunk carpet, and removes the temptation for a neighbor's boat to drift against your cradle in a storm.
Raising the lift also means the cables are supporting the weight of the cradle in a consistent position, which is better than leaving them slack or at a mid-travel point where oscillation from wave action and wind can cause fretting at contact points.
Cradle bunks and bunk carpet
Foam-core bunk boards wrapped in carpet are standard on most residential lifts. Left wet and idle over the summer, they become a substrate for mold and mildew, and the carpet backing will begin to delaminate from the foam. This is mostly a cosmetic and comfort issue for the hull, but deteriorated carpet will eventually expose the bunk board edges to direct hull contact, which can leave marks.
Before you leave, hose down the bunks thoroughly to remove salt deposits, then allow them to dry completely. If you notice that carpet is peeling or the foam boards themselves are waterlogged and crumbling at the edges, note it as something to address in the fall.
Dock hardware: cleats, dock lines, and bumpers
Cleats: These get ignored until they pull out under load. Check every through-bolt. If a cleat has been slowly working loose, tighten it now. If the backing plate beneath the deck is corroded through or the wood around the fasteners is punky and soft, have it repaired before you leave.
Dock lines: Remove them. Dock lines left on cleats for months in direct sun will UV-degrade to the point of being unreliable. Coil them, store them inside (or bring them with you), and start fresh in the fall with lines you trust.
Fender brackets and bumper piles: Make sure fender brackets are still oriented properly and the fasteners are tight. A bumper pile that gets knocked sideways in a summer squall is a much smaller problem than one that pulls the hardware off the face of the dock because the mounting had already corroded through.
Ladder hardware: Dock ladders take a lot of abuse. Check every rung fastener and the mount points at the dock edge. Salt water pools in the little crevices where rungs meet stringers and corrosion accelerates there.
Electrical systems at the dock

- Underwater lights - if your dock has them, note whether any housings are already cracked or fogging with water intrusion. Left unchecked over the summer, a cracked housing will fill completely and the fixture will need replacement rather than just a lens seal.
Seawall and dock connection points
The junction where your dock meets your seawall cap is a common maintenance point. Water gets behind the seawall cap, freeze-thaw is not an issue in Sarasota but thermal expansion and storm surge are, and the caulking or sealant at dock connection plates degrades over time.
