Pre-Hurricane Checklist for Your Dock, Lift, and Seawall

Every hurricane season, the same story plays out across Sarasota, Siesta Key, Longboat Key, and the other barrier islands: a homeowner does a quick walk-out to the dock, looks around, decides it "looks fine," and heads inside to focus on shutters and sandbags. Then the storm passes, and the dock is gone, the lift is twisted, or the seawall has cracked and shifted. The waterfront prep is always the afterthought - and it's almost always the most expensive mistake.

This checklist is here to change that. It covers your dock, your boat lift, and your seawall, in that order, with specific actions and the reasons behind each one. Print it out and use it every time a named storm is tracking toward the Gulf.

Why Waterfront Structures Take Such a Beating in Storms

Before getting into the list, it helps to understand what you're actually up against. A hurricane doesn't just bring wind - it brings storm surge, wave action, and dramatically elevated water levels that can hold for hours. Your dock is designed to flex and hold under normal tidal variation. Storm surge is something else entirely.

When water rises three, five, or eight feet above normal, floating docks can ride up over their pilings and detach entirely. Fixed docks can have their decking ripped off by wave action or can buckle when surge debris hits them broadside. Boat lifts - particularly cradle lifts and vertical lifts - are extremely vulnerable to wave loading and floating debris. And seawalls, which are already fighting hydrostatic pressure from the landward side every day, can crack or bow when surge pressure attacks from both directions at once.

In other words, the threat isn't just "strong wind." It's a multi-directional, sustained assault on structures that are already working hard just to stand up in normal conditions.

Understanding this is why the checklist below isn't just a set of tasks to check off. Each item has a specific failure mode it's trying to prevent.

Start Here: Know the Condition of Your Structures Before Storm Season Even Starts

The single best hurricane preparation you can do happens in May or early June, before a storm is even named. Walk your dock, inspect your seawall, and look at your lift cables, bunks, and hardware with fresh eyes.

If you've been putting off dock, boat lift, or seawall repairs for a few months, now is the time to make the call. Structures that are already weakened - a piling that's soft at the waterline, a seawall cap that has a hairline crack, a lift cable that's fraying - are going to fail dramatically in a storm. Catching these things before peak season is not only safer, it's almost always cheaper than emergency repairs after a storm.

Dock Checklist

Remove Everything That Can Become a Projectile

This is the first and most important step. Everything on or around your dock that isn't structurally part of it needs to come off before a storm arrives.

  • Dock boxes and storage containers
  • Chairs, tables, umbrellas
  • Fishing rod holders (removable type)
  • Hoses, extension cords, and power pedestals if removable
  • Bumpers, fenders, and dock lines not needed for securing a vessel
  • Any decorative lighting or flag poles

In a storm, a dock box becomes a battering ram. A chair becomes a missile. These items don't just damage your own structure - they float or fly into neighboring docks, seawalls, and boats. Removing them is both a liability issue and a basic courtesy to your neighbors.

Check and Reinforce Dock Connections

Look at where your dock connects to the pilings. Are the brackets and hardware in good shape? Any hardware that's heavily corroded or loose should be addressed. The connection points are where docks most commonly fail in surge conditions - once one bracket goes, the whole section can go with it.

For floating docks, inspect the float drums or foam billets underneath. A float that's already partially waterlogged sits lower and has less buoyancy reserve to handle surge. These should have been addressed in your spring inspection, but if you notice one sitting noticeably lower than its neighbors now, flag it.

Inspect and Secure Dock Pilings

Walk the perimeter of your dock and press against each piling near the waterline. A piling that has significant soft rot will give noticeably. A storm isn't going to spare a compromised piling - it's going to find it and take it. If you find one that concerns you, call for an inspection. Boat Lift Checklist

Lower the Boat - or Remove It Entirely

This is non-negotiable. A boat left on a lift during a hurricane is almost certainly going to be damaged, and it may take the lift with it. The lift is designed to hold the boat's static weight in calm water, not to resist the dynamic forces of wave action and surge pushing against a hull that's sitting six feet off the water.

If your marina has available slips and is accepting boats before the storm, consider wet-slipping your vessel. It's not a perfect solution (surge damages docked boats too), but a boat secured in a protected slip at or below water level often fares better than one sitting on a lift in full exposure. Follow your marina's specific guidance and your insurance carrier's recommendations.

If you're keeping the boat on the lift, lower it as far as it will go and secure it with additional lines tied to the dock pilings in multiple directions - not just fore and aft.

Secure or Remove the Lift Canopy

Lift canopies are enormous wind sails. Even canopies marketed as "hurricane resistant" can fail in major storms, and when they go, they take the lift frame with them or send canvas and aluminum into neighboring properties. If your canopy frame is designed to be lowered or folded, do it. If the canopy is removable, remove it. At minimum, cut or unlace the canvas panels so air can pass through rather than load the frame.

Inspect Cables and Bunks Now

Lift cables are a year-round concern in our salt environment. A fraying cable that fails when the boat surges in storm conditions can drop the boat suddenly and damage both the vessel and the lift structure.

Check the bunks (or cradle pads) for alignment and security as well. In surge conditions, a boat can shift off its bunks, and if it does so in an awkward direction, it can lever against the lift frame in ways it was never designed to handle.

Seawall Checklist

Walk the Entire Seawall Length

This is a five-minute job that most homeowners skip because seawalls look the same every day. Before a storm, walk slowly along the full length of your seawall and look for:

  • Cracks in the cap or face panels, especially horizontal cracks in the cap
  • Any section where the cap has shifted, tilted, or pulled away from alignment
  • Spots where the soil behind the wall has slumped or pulled back
  • Evidence of erosion at the base or around weep holes

Pay attention to the yard side as well. Soggy soil near the base, or a depression that wasn't there before, can indicate voids behind the wall where soil has already been lost. This is a structural red flag even in calm conditions.

Clear Debris and Vegetation Near the Base

Overgrown vegetation along the seawall base can trap debris in a storm and apply additional lateral pressure to the wall. Clear back any heavy brush or root masses that are pressing against the wall face or the cap. Roots working into cap cracks can also accelerate damage once wave energy is applied.

Know When to Call Before the Storm

Seawall repairs cannot be done in the 24 to 48 hours before a storm. Contractors are finishing emergency prep work, concrete needs cure time, and access becomes impossible once conditions deteriorate. After the Storm: What to Look for Before You Walk Out

Once the storm has passed and conditions are safe, resist the urge to immediately walk out on your dock. Your first job is a visual inspection from land.

  • Is the dock still in the same position, or has it shifted?
  • Are all pilings still upright, or are any leaning significantly?
  • Is there visible wave damage to the decking or cap?
  • Has your seawall moved, cracked open further, or lost material from behind it?

If anything looks significantly different from before the storm, treat the structure as compromised until it can be inspected by a professional. A dock that has shifted can fail suddenly underfoot. A seawall that has cracked open may be holding back a void that could collapse into the water without warning.

Document everything with photos for your insurance claim before any cleanup or repairs begin.

Connecting the Pre- and Post-Season

The best waterfront hurricane prep is really a year-round mindset. Structures that are well-maintained going into a storm tend to come out the other side in better shape - or at least fail in ways that are easier and less expensive to repair. Structures that were already marginal often sustain catastrophic damage that requires full replacement rather than repair.
