Rotting dock pilings don't announce themselves. One day your dock feels solid; the next, a piling snaps at the waterline when a boat nudges it wrong, and the whole platform lists toward the water. By the time the damage is obvious, it's usually expensive. The good news is that wood rot and marine borer activity leave plenty of clues for a homeowner willing to look carefully, and catching those clues early is the difference between a straightforward repair and a full piling replacement.
This post walks you through exactly what to look for, explains what marine borers actually do inside your pilings (it's more alarming than most people realize), and tells you how to decide when a professional inspection makes sense.
Why Sarasota-Area Pilings Face Extra Pressure
Saltwater is unforgiving, and the waterways around Sarasota, Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Casey Key, and Venice are warm year-round. That warmth matters because two of the most destructive forces acting on your dock pilings, wood-rotting fungi and wood-boring marine organisms, both thrive in warm, brackish or salt water. The tidal zones in Sarasota Bay, Little Sarasota Bay, and Roberts Bay keep pilings cycling between wet and dry conditions continuously, which is precisely the environment that accelerates fungal decay. Add in the sun's UV work above the waterline and the biological assault below it, and an untreated or aging piling has a shorter service life here than almost anywhere on the Gulf Coast.
If you own waterfront property in Osprey, Nokomis, or along the Intracoastal in Venice Island, you're dealing with the same conditions. The organisms don't care about zip codes.
The Two Enemies: Rot and Marine Borers
Most homeowners lump all piling damage together as "wood rot," but there are actually two distinct problems happening, often at the same time.
Fungal wood rot happens in the presence of moisture and oxygen. Fungi digest the lignin and cellulose that give wood its strength, leaving behind a soft, crumbling, or spongy material. On dock pilings, this most commonly attacks the splash zone, the area that sits right at the waterline, alternately submerged and exposed to air. It also hits the tops of pilings where fresh water can pool after rain.
Marine borers are a different category entirely. These are living organisms, not fungi, and they do their damage from the inside out.
What Marine Borers Actually Do
This is the part that surprises most people, and it's important enough to explain clearly.
There are two main types of marine borer in Florida waters:
Shipworms (Teredo navalis and related species) are actually mollusks, distantly related to clams. They have a tiny shell that acts like a drill bit. A shipworm enters a piling as a nearly microscopic larva through a pinhole-sized opening in the wood surface. Once inside, it spends its entire life tunneling through the interior, growing up to a foot or more in length while it eats. It lines the tunnel with a chalky calcium secretion as it goes. The entry hole at the surface can be hard to spot because it stays small, sometimes smaller than a pencil tip, even while the creature inside has hollowed out a piling that looks perfectly intact from the outside.
Gribbles (Limnoria species) are tiny crustaceans, resembling very small pill bugs, that attack from the outside in. They burrow just below the surface, creating a fibrous, raveled texture on the wood. A heavily gribble-infested piling looks like it has been whittled down unevenly, with a rough, corrugated outer layer and a narrowed core. Unlike shipworms, gribbles work as a colony across the whole surface rather than tunneling deep individually.
Here is why this matters so much: a piling that has been colonized by shipworms can look entirely normal on the surface right up until the moment it fails structurally. The outer shell of wood may still be intact, still dark and firm to the touch, while the interior has been reduced to a honeycomb of tunnels. Tapping the piling with a hammer may produce a hollow sound, but if the remaining shell is thick enough, it may still feel solid underfoot. This is why a visual inspection from a dock railing is not enough.
A Hands-On Inspection: What to Look For
Here is a systematic approach you can do yourself from a boat or by getting down to the waterline.
Look Above the Waterline First
- Checking the top of each piling. Look for soft, punky wood, dark discoloration, or material that crumbles when you press a screwdriver into it. End grain at the top absorbs water fast and often rots before the rest of the piling.
- Look at the cap and hardware. Where metal hardware is fastened to a piling, the wood around bolts and screws is vulnerable to water infiltration. Rust streaks running down from fasteners are a warning sign.
- Check for vertical cracks. Some checking (surface cracking along the grain) is normal in older wood, but deep longitudinal splits allow water to penetrate far into the piling's core.
Inspect the Splash Zone Carefully
The splash zone, roughly from 18 inches above the waterline to 18 inches below, is the highest-risk area for fungal rot. If you can access it from a kayak or paddleboard:
- Press a screwdriver or probe into the wood with moderate force. Sound wood should resist. If the probe sinks easily or the wood feels spongy, you have active decay.
- Look for a "waist," meaning the piling is noticeably narrower at the waterline than above and below it. This indicates the wood has been eaten away significantly.
- Note any dark staining, sliminess, or softness that feels different from the rest of the piling.
Tap Testing
A hammer or rubber mallet tells you a lot. A solid piling returns a sharp, dense knock. A hollow or dull thud suggests interior voids from shipworm tunneling or advanced decay. Work your way up and down the piling at six-inch intervals. Any change in resonance deserves attention.
Look for Marine Borer Entry Holes
Particularly around the submerged section of the piling, look for small pinholes, sometimes surrounded by a slight darkening or a chalky residue (the calcium lining of a shipworm tunnel). A gribble infestation shows up as a roughened, fibrous, or "furred" texture on the surface of the wood, often with a narrowing cross-section.
Check Alignment and Stability
Step back and sight down the row of pilings from one end of the dock. Leaning pilings are not always a rot problem (they can be a seawall or soil issue), but a piling that has rotted at the base below the mudline may lean or wobble under lateral pressure. If you can grab a piling near the waterline and rock it, there should be essentially no give. Wobble is a red flag.
Species and Treatment Matter
Not all pilings are equal. Pressure-treated pine (CCA or newer formulas) is the most common material used in this region and offers meaningful resistance to both rot and marine borers, but it is not immune, especially as the treatment leaches out over years of immersion. Untreated pine or fir pilings, sometimes salvaged or used in older docks, have very little natural resistance. Some older docks in Venice and the southern parts of our service area still have original pilings from decades ago, and those deserve particularly close attention.
Composite or fiberglass pilings are increasingly popular in new installations precisely because they are immune to rot and marine borers, but they have their own failure modes at connections and under impact loads.

When a Professional Inspection Is the Right Call
DIY inspection gets you most of the way there, but there are situations where a professional should take a look before you make any decisions.
- If your dock is more than 15 years old and has never been professionally assessed.
- If you found soft wood, hollow sounds, or entry holes during your own inspection.

What Happens If You Wait
Homeowners sometimes know a piling is soft and decide to watch it for another season. That is understandable, especially when the dock still looks fine and repair budgets are tight. But there are real risks to that calculation.
First, marine borer activity is not linear. A piling that is 40 percent compromised this spring may be structurally inadequate by fall, because the remaining wood continues to be consumed. There is no stable plateau.
Second, a failed piling under a loaded dock can take adjacent pilings with it. Loads redistribute and the neighboring piling, which may already have some decay, suddenly carries more than it was designed for.
Third, some docks in our service area, particularly older ones in Bird Key, Lido Key, and the canals of South Venice, are in neighborhoods with active boating traffic and wakes. Repeated wave action dramatically accelerates the failure of a piling that is already weakened.

How We Approach Piling Assessment
